Of the things we Think, Say and DO
                Is it
  1.  The Truth?
  2. Fair to all Concerned?
  3. Will it Build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
  4. Is it Beneficial to All Concerned?

  Opportunity to Work towards Peace:
By Ann Frisch, Rotary District 5960 Peace Chair
“Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence, but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
To create peace we need to educate ourselves in non-violence.
The Twin Cities Nonviolent organization is coordinating “10 Days Free from Violence” to be held from September 21-30.   These 10 days offer Rotarians an opportunity to learn more about creating peace in their environment and the world.
The following links will provide an outline of the activities available throughout the metro area and beyond.

If you cannot attend one or more of the activities during the week, check out this speaker who will be facilitating a Forum on Sept. 27.
Paul Chappell is an Iraq war veteran who has written several books on Peace-Making and is willing to speak to your group or club about creating Peace in the world. His experience as a soldier provides valuable insights for world peace.
Here are two links to preview his work.
Paul Chappell will be facilitating a Forum: Waging Peace: Building the Blocks of the Foundation for Peace on September 27, 2018 at the First Universalist Church located at 3400 DuPont Avenue South, Mpls.  Time is 7:00-9:00pm.

Are you currently holding an event regarding Peace in your Community?  Please share with Ann your work and ideas as they will help other clubs to create ideas for working towards a peaceful world and community.

Better Angels Skills Workshop:
How to Talk Across Our Differences

Please join us for the Better Angels Skills Workshop to:
    • Learn skills to have respectful conversations with people who disagree with you.
    • Clarify differences
    • Search for common ground
    • Deal with the stress among family members and friends whose view differ from yours

The Better Angels Skills Workshop will help you learn how to disagree without being disagreeable.  After a presentation, you will have an opportunity to practice conversation skills. You will practice in a pair with someone with a similar viewpoint.

As you know, Rotary is a neutral, non-political organization and does not endorse parties or candidates. We believe life – and our clubs- are richer with diversity of thought, culture, and yes… political leanings.

We respect the goals of Better Angels as an agent to help citizens practice listening, empathy, and appreciation for those who we disagree with.

Hope to see you on October 18th!

About Better Angels:  Launched in 2016, Better Angels is a bipartisan citizen’s movement to unify our divided nation. By bringing red and blue Americans together into a working alliance, we’re building new ways to talk to one another, participate together in public life, and influence the direction of the nation.

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory…will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature. – Abraham Lincoln, 1861
