Speak Like a Native: Language, Dialect, and Social Inclusion

Julia has enjoyed a lifelong fascination with language and the ways that we communicate with one another. She has a bachelor's degree in linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has studied Spanish, French, and Turkish, dabbled in Russian, Greek, and various native and creole languages, and has worked on research in language and dialect acquisition. Other areas of study include dialectal variation and linguistic discrimination. These days, she works for the Water Quality Association, where her linguistics background helps her when working with international clients. She continues to explore her love of language through independent study, songwriting, and fiction writing.
